Does money drive your communications? Does your communications pie chart look like your values pie chart?
In recent conversations with nonprofit leaders, I’ve been surprised to see how much people vary in their communications focus. Several people spoke about their efforts in percentages. Being the visual thinker that I am, I turned them into pie charts. It’s an interesting way to look at who you are talking to.
For many groups, their values aren’t showing up in what they say and who they say it to. Most nonprofits are not centering communities and those directly impacted by injustice as much as they feel they should. Instead, the money drives their focus. Big donors and foundations get the communications attention.
What is your pie chart of communications? Does it reflect your organization’s values and goals?
